Embracing Innovation: Switching to the Sony A7IV Mirrorless Camera

In the ever-evolving world of photography, staying at the forefront of technology is essential for capturing breathtaking moments and achieving professional-level results. At BLCImaging, we strive to do just that. We have now jumped on board the mirrorless camera train and have made the switch to Sony with the Sony A7IV. In this blog post, we'll explore the reasons behind switching to the Sony A7IV and the transformative impact it will have on our imaging services.

I had been a Canon DSLR shooter for the past 20 years, so making the switch to a completely different brand and ecosystem was a bit scary! After months upon months of research and the back and forth of second guessing myself, I finally decided to trade in all of my Canon gear (camera, lenses, flashes, etc. ) and upgrade to the Sony A7IV. And let me tell you...I could not be happier.

My workhorse since 2013 had been the Canon 6D, not the newer Mark II, but the OG Mark I. It was and still is a great camera...20.2 megapixels, 64 point auto focusing system, Full Frame, and compatible with the legendary L-Series lenses from Canon. But, by today's standards, it was a bit long in the tooth. Only 20.2 megapixels, no 4K video recording, no eye-tracking or continuous auto focus, and it was using old DSLR technology, it uses a mirror!

So why the change to Sony and not just a mirrorless Canon camera? I decided if I was going to make the change it was going to be big, and since Sony started the mirrorless game and has become it's biggest player, I had to go with them. And, in my opinion, compared to Sony glass, Canon's RF lenses are overpriced. Their system also does not support third party lenses like Sigma and Tamron. So I would be forced to only buy Canon glass.

Ok, enough about me and my decision making process, let's talk about the camera!

Image Quality:

The Sony A7IV boasts a remarkable 33-megapixel full-frame sensor, delivering stunning image quality with exceptional detail and clarity. The camera's advanced image processing capabilities ensure vibrant colors, rich tones, and impressive dynamic range, which is a must for my line of work. This allows me to capture scenes with a level of precision and image quality that is great for getting those details that are so important in Real Estate photography.

Fast and Precise Autofocus:

One of the standout features of the A7IV is its cutting-edge autofocus system. With 693 phase-detection points covering 93% of the frame, the camera locks onto subjects with unparalleled speed and accuracy. Whether I'm shooting in low-light conditions or out in the sun, the A7IV's autofocus ensures I will always get the shot, photo or video. I also love that this camera is so smart! It has an eye tracking function for when I am shooting videos and people are involved, it never loses that focus.

Versatility in Video Production:

For video, the Sony A7IV is a game-changer for me. It supports 4K video recording at up to 60fps, providing cinematic quality footage for our video projects. The camera's impressive in-body image stabilization (IBIS) ensures smooth and steady shots, even in challenging shooting conditions where a gimbal may not be useable. Additionally, the A7IV offers advanced video features like S-Log3 and HLG for enhanced color grading options to make the videos pop!

Compact and Lightweight Design:

One of the primary advantages of mirrorless cameras is their compact form factor, and the Sony A7IV is no exception. Weighing in at just under 700 grams, this camera is a lightweight powerhouse that won't weigh me down during extended shoots. Its smaller size also makes it easier to fit into spots and get shots that I may not have been able to get before.

Intuitive Controls and User Interface:

I had heard that Sony has always been praised for its user-friendly interfaces, and the A7IV continues this tradition, if you were a Sony user. Compared to the menu in the Canon 6D, this thing is a monster! So many sub menus and settings to look through. I will be taking the baby steps approach to this one. But, the camera does feature a customizable menu system, customizable buttons and dials, a responsive touchscreen, and intuitive controls, making it easier for both beginners and seasoned professionals like me to navigate the camera's settings and functions. And, it has a flippy dippy screen!

Adaptability with E-Mount Lenses:

And lastly, the Sony E-mount lens system offers a wide range of high-quality lenses that cater my various photography needs. The A7IV's compatibility with this extensive lineup ensures that I have the tools I need to express their creativity fully. From wide-angle for real estate to telephotos and primes for the video close up shots, the E-mount system provides options. And not only can I use Sony glass, I can use third party lenses like the Sigma 16-28 f2.8.

Conclusion:

In the world of mirrorless cameras, the Sony A7IV just made sense, combining exceptional image quality, advanced autofocus capabilities, and versatile video features in a compact and user-friendly package. Making the switch to the A7IV just makes sense for BLCIMaging. Will I miss my old friend, the Canon 6D, at times probably just for nostalgia sake. But the Sony opens up new possibilities for photo and video, empowering me to push the boundaries of my craft. As technology continues to advance, embracing cutting-edge tools like the Sony A7IV ensures that BLCImaging's photography journey remains exciting, fulfilling, and future-proof. That is, until it's time to upgrade again, wink wink.
